Acquiring a large following on social media is no mean feat, particularly for small to medium sized businesses starting from scratch. For big brands and celebrities there is no challenge in building a fan-base, for others there are a number of steps to take in order to grow your audience smartly.

Its important to carefully consider exactly who your audience are before you go about trying to reach them. You don't have to go super in-depth, but there should be a process of narrowing the scope of your targeting down to a few demographics.

Advertising on social media is a rapidly growing part of digital media strategies with Facebook being the most heavily utilised for this purpose. This is in no small part because Facebook offers the best return on investment, followed by Twitter and Instagram.
Social media offers you the opportunity to effectively target your audience according to demographics, location, interests, behavioural and connections. This narrowing down of your audience reduces the amount of money you waste on inefficient ads that reach too many people that are out-with your target audience.
Easy Ways to Attract Early Likes & Follows
There are a number of ways to ensure you secure a strong base of likes and followers to grow from and get off to a flying start.
· The first, and most simple way is to send a message to all of your friends and family to inform them about your new page and ask them nicely to like or follow the page and perhaps tell their friends about it too.
· Include links to your social media accounts on everything you give or send to people, from your e-mail signature to letters and business flyers, this is a great way to build your following.
· Launching a competition that requires people to like your page, share content you have posted, or both, is a fantastic way to secure a flurry of page likes in a fairly short period of time. Including a prize as an incentive is an important part of this, ensure it is something that is going to attract interest.
· In our opinion, the most important way to attract interest in your page is to fill it with interesting and engaging content that will lead to comments, likes, shares, retweets and so on. This will not only lead to greater visibility, it also has the potential to position you as an expert in your field with informative and useful content related to your industry.
